Our Story
DVH's journey began in 1969 when founders Gerard de Villiers and John Hulme met at Groote Schuur Secondary School. Their paths continued through UCT's BSc Engineering programme before diverging—Gerard pursued a Master's in dynamically loaded structures, while John gained experience in the Navy, serving as Resident Engineer on a Floating Dock Jetty in Durban.
Despite taking different routes, they remained connected through a shared passion for engineering, sailing, squash, and golf. The idea of starting an engineering practice simmered for years until their first project arrived in 1983: a new winery for Bellingham Estate. This opportunity marked the official launch of their partnership and a lasting relationship with Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery Heineken Beverages.
From a modest 4x4m office in Harrington Street, DVH expanded to Bree Street, then acquired and renovated a historic warehouse in Alfred Street—still reflected in the company logo today. As the team grew, a second Victorian building in Hout Street became home before a major expansion in 2005 saw DVH return to Alfred Street, this time with three additional floors. In 2017, the company moved to North Wharf, and in 2023, DVH took a significant step forward by purchasing its own office space in Century City.
In 2000, DVH transitioned from a partnership to a private company, De Villiers & Hulme (Pty) Ltd, enabling employees to become shareholders and actively contribute to the firm's growth. Today, DVH continues to build on its legacy of innovation, expertise, and enduring partnerships.
